Shooting Alvin for Millennials of Tokyo.
Where do I usually find myself in Tokyo? The area is pretty small–either this local neighbourhood of Jiyugaoka, next door in Toritsudaigaku, where I live, or Shibuya. That’s pretty much the nexus of my life right now: these three places basically have most of what I need. Shibuya is the quintessential Tokyo experience: If you’re going to meet anyone, it’s the easiest place to meet them. It is also the heart and soul of a lot of what’s happening in Tokyo. I think Jiyugaoka is the polar opposite of that–it’s kind of like this chill hood; a place where you can enjoy this chill vibe. And Toritsudaigaku is, for me, a nice kind of Tokyo-neighborhood-experience; I guess you wouldn’t really come here unless you lived here. Because of that, there are a bunch of these really small eateries, and places where you go and there are just regulars that know each other. It actually has the feel of a local community versus a place like Azabu Juban, where I used to live, and which has a very different kind of experience. Juban was essentially transient: everyone was in and out of there, partying for the weekend or the night, but there was no real sense of “living” in the place, whereas Toritsudaigaku is kind of grimey and innocent, which I think is kind of important for me.
アメリカ人のAlvinは好きなエリアでほとんどの時間を過ごす。東京では、自由が丘・都立大学エリアと渋谷で過ごす時間が多い。Alvinに必要なものはこれらの場所に揃っている。渋谷は東京体験の象徴的なものだと言う。知人と待ち合わせをするには最適な場所であり、また、渋谷発のカルチャーも多いから東京で起きていることを感じ取ることができる。自由が丘は渋谷の正反対と捉えている。渋谷に比べるとゆったりとしている。都立大学は、東京のローカルな雰囲気も持っていて好きだと言う。住んでいないと滅多に行くことがないかもしれないが、それもあって、ローカルで魅力的な小さなカフェや飲食店が多い。以前は麻布十番に住んでいたこともあったが、都立大学とは全く違う体験だった。麻布十番は夜な夜なお酒を嗜んだりパーティーをしている人たちが多く賑やかな印象。その時は「生活している」という感覚は得られずにいたが、都立大学に移り住みこの街の持つローカルさと素朴な雰囲気がAlvinにとっては心地が良いと話してくれた。
